Further to my last post, here is Mayra’s report which was broadcast on BBC World Service Radio.  Listen to it here.

A bullet shot through into the community centre

A bullet shot through into the community centre

Mayra is trying to look out for the kids who don’t want bullets hitting their computers, while they sit in their bedrooms.

The boy who this happened to, now lives with his grandmother in one of Rio de Janeiro’s violent slums – Vila Cruzeiro. He thinks that the bullets won’t be able to get at him there.

But then another ten year old girl tells Mayra that she saw her friend get shot and another guy tells her that his neighbour is fighting for her life in hospital.

These are the stories that 17-year old Mayra Avellar has been recording for Your Story, from her home. Mayra won the children’s peace price last year for trying to get the world to do something for the kids in her community. She organised a protest then, but she’s not seeing any changes and she’s beginning to feel as though no-one in Brazil is listening.

Mayra’s piece is scheduled for broadcast on BBC World Service Radio tomorrow. I’m just working on the final edit now – if you have any words of encouragement for Mayra, and the other children growing up in Cruzeiro, post them here – I’m sure they’d lift her spirits.  You can see more of Mayra’s photos on flickr here.
